Geoff Morrell is a former Defense Secretary of the United States. He is also a retired U.S. Marine Corps General who has had a long and prestigious career in military service to his country, including in Iraq and Afghanistan. Morrell was sworn into office by Vice President Joe Biden on June 2, 2011.

Geoff Morrell was born in 1956 in New Jersey. He attended the University of Virginia on an NROTC scholarship, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1978. He would go on to get his master’s degree from George Washington University.

During his time at University of Virginia, he met Australian native Penny Pritzker who is currently the Secretary of Commerce in the Obama Administration and is a member of the Pritzker family, one of America’s wealthiest families. The two would get married in 1980.

Geoff Morrell joined the Marine Corps after finishing his studies at University of Virginia. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Marines Corps in 1978. He would serve on active duty until 1990, mostly with the 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune.

He was deployed once to Lebanon where he received a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for his service during that period (1983-1984).

Morrell would go on to become a Marine Corps reservist in 1990 and also joined the United States Naval Reserve.

He was called for active duty after September 11, 2001 to serve as Acting Spokesman of the US Central Command from February 13, 2002 until May 2003 when he was selected to be Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs. It is not clear when did he leave active duty but it is certain that he was serving in the USMC until 2008.

Geoff Morrell family is Australian/American since his wife Penny Pritzker is an American of Czech descent while he himself has a mixed background. He was born to an Australian father and a British mother.

In 2008 he was nominated by President George W. Bush to be Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs and was sworn in October 30, 2008.

Bush also appointed him as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense in 2005 and he would go on to serve until 2008. He also served on the Defense Health Board from 2010 to 2015.

The Obama Administration would nominate Geoff Morrell to be Undersecretary of Defense for Public Affairs, a position that he held until 2011 when President Obama nominated him to become Secretary of the Navy.
